American Express Canada

sparkAV was honoured to be given the opportunity to work with American Express Canada on their recent office overhaul and relocation - a project which required us to install well over one hundred NEC and Sharp display units into several rooms located throughout the facility. This included the creation and installation of a total of five video walls which we placed in various spaces within the building.

Perhaps the most amazing part of this large scale integration was the fact that during the course of the Cafeteria AV System build out, sparkAV was asked to take on the additional task of creating a Crestron Control System program code for a Spyder X20 Video Processor. The X20, advertised as being "the world's most powerful video processor and presentation switcher," is a mainstay of live event and broadcast environments and is usually controlled by a live operator. While the task was onerous, sparkAV's world class team of Crestron programmers created the Control Protocol, while working within an incredibly tight deadline and extremely small window of room availability. The result? American Express Canada now has a highly comprehensive User Interface that allows this complex piece of AV gear to be controlled by a relatively novice end user.

Deloitte - La Tour Deloitte

sparkAV recently completed a comprehensive AV project for Deloitte Canada. The project commenced in 2013, when sparkAV was engaged as the designate AV consultant & designer for Deloitte focusing on their new towers in downtown Montreal and Toronto. sparkAV worked closely with the client designing AV from the ground up – supplying best-in-class AV solutions that furthered the customer's "Work Place of the Future" vision. Solutions that were ultimately deployed in many cases represented industry firsts. With hundreds of rooms involved, these spaces were designed to allow for the seamless utilization of technology by users supplying a consistent user-experience throughout.

Some key elements included several Christie Digital Microtile Video Walls, some of which are interactive, Immersive Skype for Business Meeting Rooms, Wireless content collaboration, Room-Booking and IWMS Integration, a technology intensive Greenhouse space, and the first integration of a Crestron 128x128 DM Matrix in Canada. While the overall solutions are extremely sophisticated the elegant simplicity for users is what sets this project apart. In all spaces users need not plug in in order to present, video conference or collaborate with customers and colleagues alike. All in all the technology has furthered the customer's vision for an agile work space.

As an implementer, sparkAV took on the challenge of supplying and implanting one of the largest corporate AV projects that the city of Montreal has ever seen. Aside from the considerable sophistication and programming involved, there was also a very tight schedule to keep to. In the end, the sparkAV-lead team saw to the project's completion on time and on budget and to rave reviews.

This project exemplifies how sparkAV has grown and evolved since its inception in 2005. This engagement and project is one of the largest in the country displaying sparkAV's capability, capacity to scale, and resources as we deployed solutions that even the individual manufacturers were not certain could be accomplished. A close relationship with key industry leading manufacturers such as Crestron, Christie Digital, Samsung, Smart Technologies, Polycom, Biamp and others was key - as key resources at each of those organizations came together with sparkAV allowing for strong partnership that enabled our team to work with and help guide the client to a place that enabled a world-class solution that includes many industry-firsts.

ole

sparkAV began working with ole – the world's largest media management company – on their brand new, state of the art headquarters located in downtown Toronto's Southcore district. This main function for this facility was to have it act as ole's "central" office, meaning that the ability to link flawlessly with their other four locations in New York, Nashville, Los Angeles and London was an essential requirement. In order to do this, sparkAV outfitted a total of 24 spaces with Audio, Display, Crestron Digital Control, Room Booking, and Projection Systems.

Being that ole is a music company, audio quality was deemed as imperative – not just to hear the quality of their own assets, but also to conduct business through audio and video conferencing. The challenge here was that many of the rooms contained extremely hard surfaces (composed of glass and tile), making them acoustically very difficult to work with. Add this to the fact that the in-room furniture was unable to accommodate in-table boundary microphones led the sparkAV team to the inevitable conclusion that ceiling microphones were the best and only option. After weeks of hard work and minor complications, sparkAV is proud to say that the ole facility is now equipped with an audio system that allows the user to leverage its VoIP and bridging platforms to effortlessly makes calls that sound as good on the far end as they do on the near.

Ultimately, the ole project was a complex job full of specialized equipment, longer than average lead times, and unforeseen delays. Despite this, the entire team pulled together and completed an 8-figure project in just over 8-weeks of on-site installation – a fact that we are immensely proud of.

The addition of all "in-ceiling" AV items had to be coordinated into a very delicate acoustical ceiling treatment, which required hours of measuring and cross referencing with the Architect, Interior Designer, Client and other trades. sparkAV added a top of the line Audio Conferencing Unit into the clients Multiflex Triple Room, while also installing complete Floor Audio Systems, High Definition Video Conferencing Systems with HDX Microphones, and Crestron Control and Switching Systems throughout the rest of the facility. On top of this, we custom designed a table with an installed Projector Lift inside of it, for the specific purpose of enabling mobile use of the projector in that space. This table has a solid, flat surface, with a built in compartment underneath to hold the unit. When the projector is needed the table section rotates 180 degrees.

Collins Barrow

The Collins Barrow AV project included the clients Reception Area, Flex Room and several Meeting Rooms. sparkAV used articulating mounts to install six LCD televisions throughout the Collins Barrow facility; these mounts allowed the units to sit flush within a custom enclosed wood surrounding on the wall, but also allowed for the display to be pulled out and turned for optimum viewing experience. In the client's Flex Room we added a Projection System, Audio System, High Definition Audio and Video Conferencing System and a Control and Switching System, all of which is operated through several SP Control Wall Controllers.

MNP LLP

sparkAV was contracted to handle the office overhaul of MNP LLP's Downtown Toronto and Markham offices. These projects included the revamping of multiple spaces (Bistro, Media, Boardroom, Conference, Multi-Purpose, Reception and Meeting) which covered several floors. The Main Boardroom and Multi-Purpose Room included the installation of a Projection System, Audio System, Digital Control and Switching System and Audio Conferencing System, while the additional rooms received multiple televisions and SP Control Keypads.

Greystone Managed Investments Inc.

sparkAV was hired to implement all of the audiovisual elements in Greystone Managed Investments Toronto and Regina offices. Our work included the Boardrooms at both locations, in which we added LCD Projection systems with audio and an Audio/Video Conferencing System. Their Toronto office also required the addition of a 63" Plasma flat screen, which we paired with an AMX Control System.

About sparkAV

Founded in 2005, sparkAV operates from a location that is both convenient to the downtown core and rich in Canadian history - having been a Ford Motors Model T manufacturing plant in the early 1900's. We are comprised of the AV industry's most creative, passionate, and experienced professionals, all who possess the means necessary to provide our clients with outstanding service in current and affordable AV solutions.

The audiovisual industry changes and grows everyday and deciding which options would best suit your organization can often be overwhelming. We at sparkAV are Gold Polycom Partners, Elite Crestron Partners and are certified to sell just about any and all major ProAV brands. We understand this ever growing market and will make sure to diagnose our clients precise needs at our very first meeting, virtually eliminating all of the leg-work that clients might otherwise feel they need to do.

Although sparkAV is continuously growing and are currently working with more organizations than ever before, we continue to supply the same hard work, quality, and attention to detail that our clients have come to expect. Our goal is to provide reasonable and practical AV solutions that will best fit your company's needs, meaning that we are only interested in recommending the products that are truly required. The benefits of working with sparkAV are really quite simple; we care and we get the job done - on time and on budget.

Meet Our Team

Derek's industry experience dates back prior to 2000. Today he is sparkAV's champion of Customer Service, as well as our Chief Executive, but before this, he rose through the ranks in both financial services and fashion. Since our inception, Derek has worked to grow sparkAV into Canada's leading ProAV design and integration organization. In large part, this was accomplished by holding true to a basic core value - treat people with respect and help them achieve their goals. Derek holds P&L responsibility for sparkAV, while also working closely with our key customers. He personally oversees the customer satisfaction for all projects, and does so by always staying in close contact with our administration and project fulfillment teams. While Derek occupies an operational role, his true love is working with customers; getting out there and meeting new people and organizations, so that sparkAV can help them achieve their technology objectives, always brings a smile to his face. Derek is passionate about sparkAV, and he is not afraid to take challenges, especially if it leads to finding new and meaningful solutions for sparkAV to offer to its customers. Derek always goes the extra mile to make sure that working with sparkAV is the most positive and enjoyable experience possible.

Co-Founder/Owner – Vice President – Projects and Services /
Cofondateur et copropriétaire, Vice-président, Projets et services

Brian holds the role of sparkAV's Chief Fulfillment professional and has overall, onsite responsibility for all of our projects. Brian has worked in the ProAV industry since 1995, and brings with him a wealth of knowledge. It was his experience with other ProAV companies that compelled him to participate with the inception of sparkAV, as he wanted to create an entity that did things right. This experience, coupled with his sincere desire to help, is a large contributing factor to the fact that sparkAV has successfully implemented every project that we have ever been given. Brian's project management skills, attention to detail and care for our customers is the perfect combination to generating success. Coordinating our technical team across different provinces is no simple task, but Brian makes it look easy, always working hard to ensure that our projects are completed on time and on budget.

Sean's experience in the ProAV market dates back to the early 2000's. His primary role within sparkAV is Business Development, expanding relationships and growing our market share. As sparkAV's chief sales professional, Sean's daily tasks are always geared towards building and developing relationships. Sean's approach is open, honest and understanding - and that sincerity has proven to be a major contributing factor in sparkAV's successes. Sean wants everything that we do to be the very best choice for his customers as, in his words, "it's all about the clients." Although Sean leads our sales team, he still personally remains as a main sales contact for many of sparkAV's valued customers. Sean loves working through the challenges, so it is not unusual to see him working through lunch to help get the job done, so that our customers get to where they need to be. His hand-on contribution to all aspects of system design, implementation and final commissioning make a difference and show how much he cares.

sparkAV is a passionate advocate of environmental preservation and have implemented a number of programs which we feel will help safeguard our earth's protection:

  • We are members of the Green Building Council – an organization that promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices.
  • We are a proponent of "ProAV Environmental Best Practices" and actively seek to operate in that spirit
  • Our office facilities use energy efficient lighting
  • Our Toronto head office is located in the heart of the downtown core, with direct access to all TTC lines, which employees are encouraged to take advantage of. We also plan all corporate events with the same intentions in mind
  • Carpooling, when possible, is encouraged of all technicians travelling to and from job sites
  • Our offices have a no-idling policy for vehicles to minimize pollution
  • We do our best to recommend products that participate in the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) program

From an overall design perspective, sparkAV is committed to leveraging current and cutting edge technologies that reduce the environmental impact. Examples include:

  • using motion sensors, occupancy sensors or RFID systems which "activate" or put all systems in a "˜SLEEP/Standby" mode
  • integrating systems within buildings' IWMS systems
  • deploying room-booking technology to monitor and manage real estate usage and activity

Finally, our waste recycling and reconditioning programs see that all materials used in packaging our products are either re-used, or if that is not possible, recycled in the appropriate way. The same can be said for older or obsolete equipment, which we fix or upgrade with the intention of prolonging its life and keeping waste out of our landfills. These two programs alone keep our waste recycling percentage in the upper 80's at all times.

Philanthropy

Giving back to the community has been, and always will be,
an important part of what sparkAV is about!

As parents, brothers, sisters, aunts & uncles ourselves, the people at sparkAV understand the importance of family and community; whether it is a child who is seriously ill, a cousin who is fighting cancer, a friend who needs a meal and roof over their head, or a teenager who wants to play hockey but cannot afford to, sparkAV wants to help. And while we may not be able to do it all, we can certainly do what we can to make a difference.
Since our inception sparkAV has supported a number of local charities and initiatives :
The Starlight Foundation

For the past 23 years, The Starlight Children's Foundation has been working hard to provide assistance to Canadian children who are living with serious or life altering illnesses. They do whatever they can to help make a sick child's day slightly brighter, such as providing toys, shampoo or other daily necessities for both the child and their families to make use of. These carry the intention of providing a distraction and some level of comfort to a family who is facing a long and extended stay, in a new and often stale environment. Derek Shama, sparkAV 's Co-Founder and President, has been a Starlight volunteer for two decades. He has sat on the Starlight Foundation's Global board, acting as the Canadian voice for global initiatives, as well as the Canadian Board of Directors. Since our inception, Derek, and sparkAV, have remained absolutely committed to Starlight, and have been Gold sponsors of the annual Gala event for many years. In 2013 Derek' chaired the event which was the highest grossing and most profitable Gala in Starlight Canada's history!

The Ride to Conquer Cancer

This is Canada's most successful cycling fundraiser, hosting rides all across the province in support of cancer research. The Toronto event uses its proceeds to benefit The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute, which is located at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - one of worlds the top five cancer research centers.

The Red Door Family Shelter

One of Toronto's largest family shelters, providing services for over five hundred families per year, who require safe and supportive emergency shelter. They arrange counseling, support and healthcare while families are under their care and assist with finding housing, offer a moving program, a weekly food bank and ongoing caseworker support for those who are attempting to get back on their feet.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada's goal is to find a cure for all blood cancers (Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease and Myeloma), as well as to improve the quality of life for all patients. They are a Toronto founded society, and are specifically focused on funding Canadian blood cancer research.

Eva's Initiatives

Eva's Initiatives main mission is to help homeless and at risk youths lead productive and self sufficient lives. They work tirelessly to provide assistance with anything from finding a job to exploring recreational opportunities.
